SUBMISSION TERMS · what £15 does, and what it does not

The reading fee buys consideration.

It does not buy publication. You keep all rights to your work unless and until we sign a separate publishing agreement with you.

§ 01

The fee.

The reading fee is £15 per work, paid through Stripe when you submit.

The fee is non-refundable. It pays for the time and labour involved in reading and considering your work. It does not guarantee acceptance or publication.

We reserve fee-free places in every submission period. If the fee is a genuine barrier, write to us.

§ 02

The reading.

Every eligible submission is read.

We aim to respond within four to eight weeks. If we need longer, we will let you know.

A response is guaranteed; acceptance is not. If you think our reply is overdue or may have gone missing, please follow up after a reasonable interval.

§ 03

Your rights.

You retain copyright in your work.

Submitting gives us permission to review it and nothing more. We will not publish, excerpt, share or display your work without a separate publishing agreement.

Any publishing agreement will be negotiated for the individual work and will set out rights, payment, distribution and other terms.

§ 04

The Alt-CINDEX calibration corpus.

Works selected from the inaugural round will become the first publicly accessioned works in the Alt-CINDEX, with their tags developed in full for its launch.

All submissions in the round, whether selected or not, may also inform the Index’s calibration. This means they may help us test and refine its categories and methods. The works themselves will not be published or displayed without permission.

§ 05

How to submit.

All work must be sent through the Submissions Portal.

Attachments sent by email will be returned unread.

Before submitting, read what we publish: the editorial guidelines.

The inaugural round is now open.
