THE LAB · what it is, concretely
The public programme that trains the public to produce avant-garde knowledge.
Salons, hands-on production labs, an exhibition, an anthology. Participants bring an idea; we bring the tools, the practitioners, and the room where it happens.
THE PHILOSOPHY · why a lab at all
An alternative press house needs
an alternative school.
Barring design schools and fields like architecture and medicine, students in traditional academia are typically told to laser-focus on producing one thing: a paper.
A paper to circulate. A paper to deliver at conferences. A paper to cede to the assembly-line machinery of publish-or-perish. Depending on the institution, capstone projects — and persuasive attempts to build material institutions from theory — are even proactively dissuaded. Unvarnished theory is often considered pure, as long as it hasn't been touched by attempts to make it real.
A whole pipeline is designed to put the academic paper on a pedestal: an undergraduate learns to write papers; a master's student learns to write better papers; a PhD is a decade-long apprenticeship in producing the best possible iteration of a paper.†
In reality, distilling an argument into a material artefact is also an exercise of brain power. It is thinking under stricter constraints: matter pushes back in ways the page does not. The transition from theory to thing should invite discussions about how 'rigour' or 'truth' change when the materiality swaps from linear, sequential text to something else — invigoration, rather than abject epistemic terror.
We are building a parallel reality for knowledge production, and a parallel reality can't run on the incumbent’s training programme. If the old ecology matriculates paper-writers, ours must matriculate worldbuilders, filmmakers, zine-makers, materialisers of argument. The Lab is that public matriculation; it's the curriculum for the literary, visual, and cross-disciplinary forms we're calling into emergence.
† It would've been good if the paper were allowed artistic and literary liberty: if it could take on the shape of an epic, or a novella where schools of thought play characters. But it's not. The paper has a very specific set of rules, infamously effective against neurodivergent and creative thinking, which, incidentally, is what most genius minds are comprised of.
UFP PUBLIC PROGRAMS
The Knowledge Design Lab.
The Knowledge Design Lab is UFP's public programme. It teaches the public how to build worlds out of knowledge, and to design new genres of artistic and literary production. It runs as four hands-on labs and three public events: a salon, an exhibition, an anthology. To teach the labs, we've enlisted masters of their craft across art and technology, from all over the world — a global-facing curriculum, open to the public.

LAB 01 · NEW PUBLISHING FORMATS
Genre Production Lab
Learn meta-theory. This lab teaches participants how to produce artistic, literary, and cross-disciplinary genres. What are genres? How do they work? How do you build one?
▶ OPENS FOR ENROLMENT · V.002LAB 02 · FROM ARGUMENT TO MOVING IMAGE
Animation Lab
Fun stuff. Learn how an idea becomes a moving image, from first concept to finished sequence.
▶ OPENS FOR ENROLMENT · V.002LAB 03 · STORIES FOR A PLANET IN FLUX
Climate Storytelling Lab
Learn to give climate knowledge forms that travel farther than reports.
▶ OPENS FOR ENROLMENT · V.002LAB 04 · CGI & GAME-ENGINE WORLDS · BLENDER & UNREAL
Worldmaking Lab
How do you infuse knowledge into pre-designed worlds? Learn how to build worlds out of axioms, corollaries, and presuppositions.
▶ OPENS FOR ENROLMENT · V.002S.01 · PUBLIC EVENT · EVENING CONVERSATION
Uncommon Future Salon
Just 30 people in a room. This is an intimate, attentive gathering. An MIT biologist sits next to a CGI artist and they talk about the future of knowledge.
▶ OPENS FOR RSVP · V.002X.01 · PUBLIC EVENT · EXHIBITION · FREE WALK-IN
The Goo Design Lab
An artistic exhibit on the biomateriality of knowledge and its alchemical states. In what ways is knowledge goo? How does it elasticise, fractalise, coagulate? Under extreme pressure, does it change shape? We invite artists to meditate.
▶ OPENS FOR RSVP · V.002A.01 · PUBLIC EVENT · LAUNCH EVENING
Anthology Launch
We invite the greats and masters of their craft from arts and tech at the start of the programme. At its end, UFP consolidates their teachings into a design-led anthology on genre production, worldbuilding, and knowledge design.
▶ OPENS FOR RSVP · V.002PARTICIPANTS IN THE KNOWLEDGE DESIGN LAB GO HOME WITH THREE THINGS:
A skill.
A network.
A thing they made.
